TAWI-TAWI’S AGAL-AGAL FESTIVAL | The Philippines’ Only Seaweed Festival

The Province of Tawi-Tawi is considered as the biggest producer of Seaweed Powder in the country. Because of its significance to the livelihood of the people and the economy of the Province, one grand celebration is made every year as tribute to its great value. This is the Agal-agal Festival which is said to be the only Seaweed Festival in the country. It is derived from the word Agal-Agal which is the local term for seaweed in the Sulu Archipelago.

The staging of AGAL-AGAL FESTIVAL coincides with the Kamahardikaan Sin Tawi-Tawi or the Founding Anniversary of the Province which happens every 25th of September. This year, the celebration was held in the town of Languyan, one of the 11 towns of Tawi-Tawi.Agal-Agal Festival shows how the community value the importance of the seaweed industry which has been part of their living. Being a Province composed of island towns surrounded by vast seas, Tawi-Tawi is endowed with rich marine and aquatic resources. The celebration also reflects these rich bounties of the sea that Tawi-Tawi takes so much pride of.

The festival features the rich culture and traditions of the Sama, Badjau, Jama Mapun and Tausug who peacefully and harmoniously live in the Province – colourful cultures and admirable traditions that are still lived and practiced to this day.

In this year’s edition of Agal-Agal Festival, 9 out of the 11 municipalities of the province participated in the street dancing competition and showdown. Each contingent showcased their well-rehearsed and choreographed dances and performances in their most elegant traditional costumes, colourful props, and upbeat traditional music that reflect the rich culture of their town. Pangalay which is a traditional dance of the Sulu Archipelago is greatly incorporated in their graceful performances.

I have been to a number of festivals in the Philippines. In Mindanao, I have covered some of the most significant festivals that the Island boasts. And just when I thought I have seen enough, Agal-Agal Festival offered me a different festival experience – a different vibe incomparable to the other festivals I have witnessed in the country.

To be here in this southernmost part of the Philippines witnessing such spectacular festival is truly an honor. Given a chance, I shall come back and again relish another Agal-Agal Festival experience!

Shout out of thanks to the Department of Tourism – ARMM headed by Regional Secretary Ayesha M. Dilangalen for inviting The Travel Teller to witness this amusing festival of the country’s southernmost Province.

INDAK-INDAK SA KADALANAN | Kadayawan Festival 2017

“Kadayawan
Kasaulogan
Kasaganaan ng pamayanan
Kahiusahan natong tanang
Napulo ug usang kaliwatan”

Amid Martial Law extension in the whole Island of Mindanao, Davaoenos, Mindanaoans from nearby provinces, local and foreign tourists gathered in the major thoroughfares of the city to witness the much awaited, most watched highlight of Kadayawan Festival, the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan. This spectacular event has been considered as the biggest gathering of different festivals in Mindanao to compete and be hailed the grand champion. This has made Kadayawan the King of Festivals in Mindanao.

This year, eighteen contingents coming from different schools and communities in Davao City and nearby provinces assembled in the city’s downtown district for this most prized competition.

Kadayawan Sa Dabaw celebrates not only the city’s bounties of nature and the gifts of bountiful harvest but also highlights the rich heritage and diverse culture that define Davaoeños’ affluent history and colorful past. All these are all portrayed and beautifully reflected In their well rehearsed dances and choreography.

100 KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL VIBE

The vibrant colors of captivating Red and Yellow dominated the streets while the heart pounding drum beats reverberated all over the city’s downtown district. These were the colors and rhythms brought by 18 contingents as they performed rituals and dances of their respective places while dressed in multihued costumes and flanked by colorful props. The resounding ethnic chants and the deafening beat of the smashing drums ecstatically set the whole district in a jovial groovy mood.

Being a Dabawenyo, seeing these performances made me feel proud of the heritage of my city. This made me realized despite differences of culture coming from different ways of lives; we all got to embrace the multicultural diversity of the city. And despite great challenges like the threat of our serenity of living, we can still find the courage in us to find time and celebrate the bounties of our harvest, the gifts of nature and our rich culture. After all, we are Davaoenos, we are Mindanaons – WE STAND TALL. UNITED. RESILIENT.

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL 2016: The Sights and Sounds of Indak-Indak Sa Kadalanan 2016

The sun was up hiding from the cirrus clouds that day. The weather wasn’t that scorching but it was warm enough make the celebration more vibrant and lively. At seven o’clock, thrilled people not only from Davao but from other parts of the country and even foreigners started occupying the sidewalk of the city’s main thoroughfare where performers of the Street Dancing Competition will pass by. Colorful buntings were all over giving more colors to the major streets. The mood was extra cheerful. Like the previous years, everyone was tremendously excited to witness and be awed again by the sights and sounds of the Indak-indak sa Kadalanan, the most watched event of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw.

Kadayawan Festival - 2016Like those who vowed to never miss Kadayawan Festival every year, the Indak-indak sa Kadalanan has always been my personal favorite. I considered this event as a Mardi Gras of Indigenous Music and Dances featuring different cultures of Mindanao. In fact, it is the only event among other festivities that gathers different festival winners from different towns and provinces in Mindanao to compete and be hailed the grand champion among other festival winners. This is also the reason why Davao City’s Kadayawan Fest is tagged as the Mother of Festivals in Mindanao.

Kadayawan Festival 2016 11Being the city’s grandest and biggest festival celebrating all that is good in the city, the Kadayawan sa Dabaw celebrates the city’s bountiful harvest and continues to honor the rich, diverse, artistic, cultural and historical heritage of the land. Indak-indak sa Kadalanan depicts the core of this celebration – the bountiful harvest as well as the wealth of the city’s culture.

Kadayawan Festival 2016 14In this year’s street dancing mardi gras, 13 contingents from various parts of Davao and SoCCSKSarGen Region came not only to compete but also to showcase the culture of their region. Performances of each contingent feature a story line in a well-rehearsed choreography of dances, songs and other theatrical acts accompanied by the rhythm of their music and sound while dressed in colorful costumes and flanked by multihued props.

Kadayawan Festival 2016 16While tribal chanting gave goosebumps to the spectators, the deafening sounds of the smashing drums ecstatically set the whole street in a jovial mood. Despite the intense heat, people didn’t leave their place for 4 hours to patiently wait for every other contingent to perform. In the end, all the participating groups did not fail to mesmerize the spectator with their spectacular performances.

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL 2013: Indak Indak Sa Kadalanan

A celebration of life,
A thanksgiving for the gifts of nature,
The wealth of culture,
The bounties of harvest and serenity of living,
These among others are the reasons of celebrating Kadayawan Festival!

And so, despite the disheartening threats on peace and security in the metro, Dabawenyos went out courageously to the city’s major thoroughfares to celebrate this annual festival of life, abundance of harvest and tranquility of living. Along with the thousands of Dabawenyos who flock the city streets, I was among those who witnessed yet another successful and festive celebration of Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2013.

_DSC0666 copyHailed as the Mother of Festivals in Mindanao, Kadayawan Festival is not just a merriment of bountiful harvest but also a cheerful celebration of the rich heritage and diverse culture not only of the Davaoeños but even Mindanao as a whole.

_DSC0870This becomes evident as the main thoroughfares of Davao City was filled once again with lively music, remarkable dances and vibrant colors as twenty three contingents coming from different schools and communities in Davao City and nearby provinces converged in the much awaited Indak Indak sa Kadalanan, the most watched festivity of Kadayawan Festival that pays tribute to Davao and Mindanao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage.

_DSC0276In this very much anticipated Indak Indak sa Kadalanan, a Mardi Gras of Indigenous Music and Dances, the heart pounding drum beats reverberated all over the city’s downtown district while the vibrant colors of captivating Red and Yellow dominated the streets. These were the rhythmic beats and vivid hues brought by the 23 contingents as they showcased rituals and dances of their respective tribes dressed and accessorized by multihued costumes while flanked by fabulous props.

_DSC0675The performers’ energetic moves, amusing choreography and the resounding ethnic chants joyously set the whole thoroughfare in a festive groovy mood. While performers are up dancing on the street, people were cheering mesmerized by such spectacular event. The rhythm of the drumbeat put the whole crowd in carefree spirit – dancing and jumping along with the performers.

Kadayawan Festival 2013While the awe inspiring performances of different contingents showcased the rich and diverse cultures of Davao and Mindanao, their dances and choreography portray beautiful stories that often centered on the lives of their tribe, their people, their belief and their connection to mother earth.
