If you are a beach freak and you’re gone traveling down south in Davao Region, your trip is not complete if you’ve never touched the pristine sands of Dahican Beach in the quaintest City of Mati in Davao Oriental.
Just 3 hours ride from the metropolitan Davao City, this Edenic paradise of powdery white sand, playful waves and untainted shores has fast become popular among beach enthusiasts around the country. It has become one major tourist destination groomed to become the Skimboarding Capital of the Philippines.
Used to be secret beach paradise of the locales, this tropical jewel is endowed by a seven-kilometer stretch of pure white sand beach lined attractively with coconut trees, facing the clear turquoise waters of the great Pacific Ocean. During monsoons months, the open sea’s waves and currents are huge and ravaging. It seems pretty scary and ruthless for those who do not know how to swim. But for those who love to play the waves, the beach is a perfect spot for surfing and skimboarding.
When it gained a reputation being the region’s skimboarding capital, Dahican has attracted thousands of skimboarders and surfers across the country. In fact, Skimboarding Competitions are held here annually gathering the best players of the waves coming not just from the Philippines but some parts of the world. It becomes one of the most anticipated annual events in the whole region drawing thousands of crowds – skimboarders or not. Because of such, Dahican Beach becomes synonymous to the word “skimboarding”.
Dahican’s reputation for skimboarding is attributed to the team that started it all on the shores of Dahican – the Amihan Boys. The now renowned Amihan Boys is a homegrown team of local skimboarders and surfers headed by Kuya Jun Plaza, a native of Dahican. Amihan Boys has gained wide reputation as the best Skimboarders and Surfers in the country and has gone far joining competitions here and abroad. Today, these amazing boys became local celebrities as some of them have won various local and international skimboarding competitions.
Kuya Jun, who acts as a father and mentor to the team does not only teach the boys to become the best players but he teaches them with good values to live by away from vices and the likes. Today, the group of Kuya Jun gives free skimboarding and surfing clinics, spearhead surfing tournaments and promote good sportsmanship.
